Medicare Advantage (Part C) Plans in Jackson, MS

A Medicare Advantage plan is run by a private company that Medicare approves, and it pays your claims instead of Original Medicare. You're still in Medicare. One card just covers your hospital care, your doctor visits and usually your prescriptions.

You trade copays and a network for a lower premium, and around Jackson the network is the first thing to check. UMMC, Baptist, St. Dominic and Merit Health each sign their own contracts with plans. A plan that suits a St. Dominic patient in Ridgeland may not suit someone whose doctors are all at UMMC.

  • Low or $0 plan premiums
  • A yearly limit on what you pay
  • Drug coverage included in most plans
  • Dental, vision and hearing extras

Costs

What a Part C plan costs you

Your Part B premium still goes to Medicare. In 2026, most people pay $202.90 a month for it. Some Advantage plans add their own premium on top, from $0 up to a modest sum. Each time you get care, you pay a copay. A family doctor visit costs the least, a specialist costs more, and outpatient surgery or a hospital stay costs more still.

In a hard year, the out-of-pocket maximum is your safety net. After you hit that amount, covered in-network care costs you nothing more until the year ends. Original Medicare by itself has no cap like this. That's a big reason people who skip a Medigap plan often pick Advantage. For a side-by-side look, read Advantage vs. Medigap in Jackson.

  • Your monthly Part B premium doesn't go away
  • Most costs come as set copays, not a percentage
  • A yearly cap stops the bills in a costly year
  • Each January 1, the network, extras and drug list may change

Extras

Weighing the extra benefits

  • Dental, vision and hearing

Each plan sets its own allowance, and the gap between plans can be wide. The large figure in an ad might apply to only a few services. Ask how much you'd get for a cleaning and for a crown.
  • Drug coverage built in

Part D comes built into most Advantage plans. Look up each of your drugs on the plan's list. The tier a drug sits on can cost you more than the premium does. Our Part D guide has more.
  • Gym, transport and OTC cards

Many plans offer a gym membership, money for drugstore items or a ride to medical visits. These pay off only if you put them to use.

Timing

When you can join or change plans

Your first chance to join comes in the months around turning 65, called your Initial Enrollment Period. After that, the main chance comes each fall, in the Annual Open Enrollment Period from October 15 to December 7. People already in an Advantage plan get one more change between January 1 and March 31, during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period.

Outside those dates, a Special Enrollment Period may open if you move, lose coverage from a job or qualify for Extra Help. Not happy with your current plan? Start with our page on changing plans.

Prior authorization

Prior approval, a step Original Medicare mostly skips

With many Advantage plans, expensive care needs the plan's OK first. The list often covers MRI and CT scans, outpatient surgery, time in a skilled nursing facility after a hospital stay, home health, medical equipment and some visits to specialists. Your doctor asks the plan, the plan says yes or no, and your care is on hold until it answers.

Most of the time the answer is yes. How fast you hear back depends on the plan. When a plan says no, you can appeal, first to the plan itself and then to an independent reviewer. We'll walk you through that appeal if it happens to you.

Pair Original Medicare with a Medigap plan and you'll rarely need prior approval. Tell us early on if that counts for more than a small premium. It would change our suggestion.

Our process

How we check a Jackson provider network

  1. 1

    Send us your list

Your family doctor, every specialist, the hospital you'd choose and your pharmacy. Names and office locations are enough.

  2. 2

    We check next year's directory

We compare your list with every Advantage plan we represent for the coming plan year, not the one ending.

  3. 3

We call the office when needed

Plan directories aren't always right. Now and then we phone the doctor's office to confirm.

  4. 4

    You get a straight answer

You'll hear which of our plans include every provider on your list, which include only part of it, and what you'd pay for the ones left out.

We do not offer every plan available in your area

This network check only looks at the companies we represent. To learn about all plans sold around Jackson, contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or Mississippi SHIP at 844-822-4622.

Local networks

Advantage networks around Jackson

Advantage networks here are built around a handful of hospital groups. UMMC has its main campus on North State Street in Jackson and runs UMMC Madison in Canton. Baptist Memorial Health Care owns Mississippi Baptist Medical Center in Jackson and Baptist Memorial Hospital-Rankin County in Brandon, which was Merit Health Rankin until 2026. St. Dominic Hospital on Lakeland is part of FMOL Health. Merit Health runs Merit Health Central in Jackson and Merit Health River Oaks in Flowood. Veterans may also get care at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center.

Each county has its own lineup of plans as well. Something sold in Hinds County may not be offered in Madison or Rankin County. That's why your ZIP code is the first thing we ask for. Our service areas page lists every place we help, or you can head back to the Jackson Medicare overview.

Fit

Who Advantage suits, and who it doesn't

A good match if you

  • Get most of your care from one Jackson hospital group
  • Prefer a premium that's low or $0
  • Want a hard cap on costs in a rough year
  • Plan to use extras like dental, vision, hearing or a gym
  • Don't mind copays and getting a referral now and then

Maybe not for you if you

  • See doctors in more than one group, like UMMC and St. Dominic
  • See several specialists and want bills you can predict
  • Are partway through treatment and can't afford a network shift
  • Would rather not wait on plan approvals for care
  • Spend months out of state each year

Before you sign

Questions to ask before you sign up

Are all of my doctors in the network for next year?
Ask about every doctor by name, and ask about your hospital too. A plan can keep your family doctor and still leave out the heart doctor or surgeon you rely on.
What is the out-of-pocket maximum, in dollars?
It caps what you'd spend on in-network care in a rough year. Line the plans up on this one number. Plans sold side by side in one ZIP code can differ by thousands of dollars.
What are the copays for a specialist, outpatient surgery and a hospital stay?
Those three numbers tell you more about your real costs than the premium does. Get all three before you choose.
Do any of my medicines need prior authorization or step therapy?
Ask before you enroll. With step therapy, the plan can require you to try a cheaper drug first, even one you've already tried without success.
What will the dental benefit pay for the work I need?
The dental figure in an ad may cover only a few services. Find out the dollar amount it gives for a cleaning, for a filling and for a crown.
If the plan doesn't work out, how do I leave it?
You can change during Annual Enrollment or during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. If you want Medigap down the road, the company may ask about your health first. Our page on changing plans has the details.
