Switching Medicare Plans in Jackson, MS

Keeping the same Medicare plan year after year is still a choice you make. Networks, drug tiers and copays change every January, and a plan that fit you three years ago in Belhaven or Ridgeland may cost you more today.

Switching is usually simple once Medicare opens a window for you. Here's how to tell whether you can change plans now, and what to compare before you do.

  • Learn whether you can change plans now
  • Hold on to the doctors and drugs you count on
  • A free review, and staying put is fine
  • Help from a team that knows the Jackson area

A short move can open a window

Even a short hop, like north Jackson to Flowood, may give you a Special Enrollment Period. It depends on whether the new address is outside your plan's service area. Tell us when you're moving and we'll look into it.

Reasons

Good reasons to take another look

  • Your doctor or hospital dropped out of the plan's network
  • One of your drugs jumped a tier or was dropped from the list
  • Your Medigap premium rose once more
  • Everyday care costs more than you planned for
  • You now qualify for Extra Help or a Mississippi Medicare Cost Sharing program
  • You retired, moved, or lost your job-based coverage

A switch isn't always right. Your current plan might still beat anything else we offer where you live around Jackson. In that case, staying is the smart choice, and we'll say so. A long working relationship matters more to us than one season's change.

Switching plans around Jackson

Around here, most switching questions come back to hospitals. Advantage plans sold near Jackson don't all contract with the same groups. One might include UMMC and Baptist while another leans on St. Dominic and Merit Health, and those contracts can change at renewal. Plan choices also differ between Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties. If you're in cancer treatment, ask whether the plan includes your oncologist. If you're a veteran using the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, weigh how your VA care and a new Medicare plan would work together first. Wondering whether we cover your town? Check our service areas.

Process

How a switch works

  1. 1

    Gather what you have

Your plan card, your drug list and the names of the doctors you want to keep.

  2. 2

Look at a full year of costs

We add the premium, deductible, copays, network and drug tiers over a full twelve months.

  3. 3

    Confirm your window

Before any application gets signed, we confirm you can switch and pin down when the new plan starts.

  4. 4

Sign up, then we follow through

We send in the forms, watch for the approval, and check that the old plan stops right as the new one begins.

Questions

Questions about switching plans in Jackson

Can I change my Medicare plan any time I want?
No. You need an open window. The big one is Annual Open Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, when most people make their changes. Other times of year, a Special Enrollment Period may open after a move, after you lose coverage from a job, or when your plan stops serving your county.
My doctor left my plan's network. What can I do?
Ask us for a review first. When a doctor you count on at UMMC, Baptist, St. Dominic or Merit Health drops out of your Advantage network, we look for an open window. The goal is a new plan with no break in coverage.
Does moving to another part of town open a window?
It can. A move outside your plan's service area can open a Special Enrollment Period. Going from Jackson to Brandon might count. Staying inside the same service area usually doesn't. Give us the date you're moving and the new address, and we'll find out.
Can I switch Medigap companies in Mississippi?
Applying is allowed whenever you like. Mississippi has no yearly birthday or anniversary rule, though. Unless you're in open enrollment or have a guaranteed-issue right, the new company may look at your health and refuse you. That's true even for the same plan letter you have now. More on Medigap in Jackson.
Can I leave Medicare Advantage for a Medigap plan?
Yes, you may drop Advantage and go back to Original Medicare in Open Enrollment or in the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. The Medigap plan is the harder piece. Once your first six months on Part B have passed, expect health questions. Without a guaranteed-issue right, the company is free to say no.
Is there a charge to see if I'm able to switch?
No. We check your window and compare plans for free. That's true whether you end up changing or staying put.
