Medicare Plans
Medicare Advantage or Medigap: Choosing in Jackson, MS
Around Jackson, most people end up choosing between two setups. A Medicare Advantage plan is a single private plan, usually with a low premium, that handles all of your coverage. A Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, works behind Original Medicare and pays most of what Medicare doesn't.
Which one suits you rests on your doctors and prescriptions, how much you travel, and whether a higher monthly bill is worth it to you for costs you can count on.
- Two ways to cover what Original Medicare leaves
- Your hospital group often settles it
- The premium is only one piece of the cost
- Free side-by-side pricing for the Jackson area

Local networks
What this means at Jackson hospitals
-
Medigap: no network
Any doctor who takes Original Medicare gets paid by your Medigap plan. That's true at UMMC, Baptist, St. Dominic and Merit Health, and out of state as well. You won't need referrals. -
Advantage: networks set the limits
Each Advantage plan near Jackson signs with its own set of hospitals. A few take in several groups, while others rely on just one. The lineup in Madison or Rankin County may not match the one in Hinds County. -
Drug coverage works differently
Part D usually comes inside an Advantage plan. Medigap buyers get Part D on its own and can shop it again each fall. That often saves money for anyone on a costly drug.
Near Jackson, the network question usually comes down to UMMC (including UMMC Madison in Canton), Baptist (Mississippi Baptist Medical Center and the Rankin County hospital in Brandon), St. Dominic and Merit Health (Merit Health Central and Merit Health River Oaks). If you're being treated for cancer, check your oncologist by name. Veterans who use the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center keep their VA benefits on either path. The VA doesn't bill Medicare, so think about where you'd go for care outside the VA. See whether we cover your town on our service areas page.
Choose Advantage if
Signs Medicare Advantage may suit you
- Keeping the monthly cost low matters most, and many plans add $0 to Part B
- The plan's Jackson-area network has your doctors and hospital
- You plan to use the dental, vision, hearing or gym extras
- Copays are fine with you as long as a yearly cap exists
- You get most routine care near where you live
Choose Medigap if
Signs a Medicare Supplement may suit you
- One even monthly premium appeals to you more than paying at each visit
- Your specialists work in more than one hospital group, or you live part of the year in another state
- You'd like to see any doctor who accepts Medicare, no referral needed
- You're getting regular treatment, and copays would stack up fast
- You're in your six-month Medigap open enrollment and won't face health questions
The timing detail people miss
You can join or switch Advantage plans every fall during Open Enrollment. Buying a Medigap plan later usually means health questions, and the company can say no. Mississippi has no yearly Medigap switching rule, so give your first choice extra thought.
Total cost
Add up a full year
A $0-premium Advantage plan still costs money when you use it. Add up what you'd likely pay in copays for checkups, specialist visits, scans and any surgery you know is coming. Set that next to a year of Medigap premiums plus a drug plan. For a healthy 66-year-old in Madison or Clinton, Advantage often costs less. For someone managing a long-term condition with regular specialist visits, Medigap often comes out ahead over the year.
