Medicare Plans in Jackson, MS: A Plain Guide

If you live in Jackson and have Medicare, or will soon, you'll most likely pick between two setups. One is a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. The other is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy with a separate drug plan. You might be turning 65 this year, retiring from a state job, or wondering whether the plan you picked last fall still fits. Annual Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7.

This page explains how Medicare works for people in Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties, what kinds of plans are sold here, and how to match a plan to your doctors, your prescriptions and what you can spend.

Two Ways to Set Up Medicare in Jackson

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) leaves gaps. Filling them is your call, and around Jackson almost everyone does it in one of two ways.

Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)

A Medicare Advantage plan is a private plan, approved by Medicare, that takes over your coverage. Plans sold around Jackson usually include:

  • Doctor visits and hospital care in one plan
  • Prescription coverage in most plans
  • A network of doctors and hospitals to use
  • Set copays and a cap on your yearly costs

Many also come with dental, vision or hearing benefits. What those extras pay for changes a lot from one plan to the next.

People pick Advantage for the low premium and the added benefits. In return, you use the plan's network. The big hospitals around Jackson belong to different groups, including UMMC, Baptist, St. Dominic and Merit Health, and a plan may include some of them and leave others out. What's for sale also shifts between Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties, so look up your doctors in the plans offered for your ZIP code. Read more about Medicare Advantage in Jackson.

Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)

A Medicare Supplement works alongside Original Medicare and picks up most of what Medicare leaves, like deductibles and coinsurance. Any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare will take it. You don't need referrals, and your costs stay about the same from month to month.

Prescriptions aren't part of Medigap. You add a separate Part D plan for those.

People often choose it when they see specialists at more than one hospital, travel to see family out of state, or would rather pay more each month than open a surprise bill. Mississippi has no birthday or anniversary rule for Medigap, so changing companies later usually means answering health questions. See Medicare Supplement plans in Jackson.

Questions

Common Medicare questions from Jackson

When do I sign up for Medicare in Jackson, and when can I change plans?
Your first window is the Initial Enrollment Period. It lasts seven months and centers on the month you turn 65. After that, Annual Open Enrollment comes around every fall from October 15 to December 7, and the changes you make start January 1. See Open Enrollment in Jackson.
How much will I pay for Part B in 2026?
Most people pay the standard rate of $202.90 a month in 2026. The yearly Part B deductible is $283. People with higher incomes pay more. Medicare sets that amount from the tax return you filed two years earlier.
Does Medigap pay for prescriptions?
No. Medigap policies sold today don't include drug coverage. Most people with Medigap add a separate Part D drug plan so they don't end up with a late enrollment penalty.
Can I have Medicare Advantage and a Medigap policy at the same time?
No. You choose one. A Medigap policy can't pay the costs inside an Advantage plan. Advantage vs. Medigap puts the two next to each other.
Where can I get free Medicare counseling in Mississippi?
Mississippi SHIP offers free, confidential counseling through the Mississippi Department of Human Services. Call 844-822-4622 on weekdays. Medicare.gov and 1-800-MEDICARE are free to use too.
Do I pay anything for your help?
No. Our licensed agents are paid by the insurance companies. Going through us doesn't change your premium. It's the price you'd pay buying direct.
