Medicare in Madison: what to know

Madison grew up around a railroad stop the Illinois Central opened in 1856, and the 2020 census counted 27,747 residents. The city has several parks. Strawberry Patch Park has a mile-long trail and a fishing pond for kids, Liberty Park has ball fields, and Simmons Arboretum has a wooded path. The Natchez Trace Parkway runs along the east edge of town, and the historic Chapel of the Cross stands in Mannsdale, just past the northwest city limits.

Hospital names changed here recently. The hospital on River Oaks Dr. in Canton, once Merit Health Madison, became UMMC Madison when the University of Mississippi Medical Center took full ownership in May 2025. If a plan directory still shows the old name, call the plan to confirm the hospital is in network under its new owner. Many Madison residents also see specialists at St. Dominic's or Mississippi Baptist in Jackson, so check those doctors as well. Veterans can use the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center on Woodrow Wilson Avenue. VA care is separate from Medicare, and some veterans keep both.

Mississippi has no Medigap birthday rule or anniversary rule. Once your six-month Medigap open enrollment window closes, moving to a new supplement usually means answering health questions, and the company can say no. Some people pick Plan G because it covers almost everything after the Part B deductible. Others take Plan N for a lower premium and pay small copays at the doctor. If you're younger than 65 and on Medicare due to a disability, Mississippi requires companies to offer you at least one Medigap policy.

The City of Madison runs a Retirement Program through City Hall on Montgomery Street, with trips, classes and social events for retirees. Call 601-856-7116. The Madison Public Library on Madison Avenue helps with computers and printing. The CMPDD Area Agency on Aging handles home-delivered meals and caregiver help for Madison County. Common questions

Questions we hear from Madison

Is UMMC Madison the same hospital as Merit Health Madison?
Yes. It's the same hospital at 161 River Oaks Dr. in Canton. UMMC became the full owner in May 2025 and renamed it. Plan directories can lag behind a name change, so we confirm network status before you enroll.
Can I change Medigap plans whenever I want in Mississippi?
You can apply any time, but Mississippi has no birthday rule or anniversary rule. Outside your six-month Medigap open enrollment period, or a federal guaranteed issue right, the company can ask health questions and turn you down. We check prices first so you know if switching is worth it.
When can I switch Medicare plans in Madison?
Every year from October 15 to December 7, anyone with Medicare can change plans for the next year. If you're in a Medicare Advantage plan, you also get one switch between January 1 and March 31. Moving, losing other coverage and a few other events can open a Special Enrollment Period.
