Medicare in Brandon: what to know
Brandon is the Rankin County seat, and the 2020 census counted 25,138 people here. The Rankin County Courthouse anchors the downtown historic district, and the Black Rose Theatre Company puts on shows in town. Everyday errands run along Highway 80 and Government Street, and the city's hospital sits off Crossgates Boulevard on the west side, close to Pearl. Brandon also borders Flowood, so doctors in all three towns are a short trip away.
That hospital, long known as Merit Health Rankin, is now Baptist Memorial Hospital-Rankin County. Baptist Memorial Health Care took over the lease from a Community Health Systems affiliate in 2026, and the main number stayed the same. New ownership can change which Medicare Advantage networks include a hospital. If you'd go there in an emergency, ask whether your plan lists it under the Baptist name for next year. Merit Health River Oaks in Flowood is the other close choice.
Medicare plans are approved county by county, so the Medicare Advantage and Part D options in Rankin County may not match the ones across the Pearl River in Hinds County. If you moved to Brandon from Jackson, a plan you had there may cost more here, or may not be sold here at all. A move to a new county can also give you a Special Enrollment Period to pick a new plan. Check your drugs, too. Every Part D plan has its own drug list and pharmacy network, and the pharmacy you use in Brandon may be preferred in one plan and standard in another.
The City of Brandon Senior Center in the municipal complex on Highway 80 is open weekdays to anyone 55 and older, with fitness classes, line dancing and Bible study. Call 601-824-7095. The Brandon Public Library on West Government Street has computers and notary service by appointment. It belongs to the Central Mississippi Regional Library System, which also runs branches in Pearl, Flowood and Richland.
