Medicare in Pearl: what to know

Pearl sits on the east bank of the Pearl River, across from Jackson, and counted 27,115 residents in the 2020 census. Trustmark Park hosts the Mississippi Mud Monsters, the Outlets of Mississippi draw shoppers off I-20, and the Jackson airport is close by. The CMPDD Area Agency on Aging, which serves Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties, has its office on Centre Pointe Boulevard in Pearl. The Mississippi Braves played at Trustmark Park from 2005 through 2024 before the team moved to Georgia.

Several hospitals are a short trip from Pearl. Merit Health River Oaks in Flowood, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Rankin County in Brandon and Merit Health Central in Jackson are all close, and so is the medical district on North State Street. These hospitals belong to different systems. A Medicare Advantage plan may cover one and not another, so match the plan to the hospital you'd want in an emergency and to the specialists you see now. Veterans can also use the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson.

If money is tight, ask about help with costs. For people with limited income, the Division of Medicaid's Medicare Savings Programs may take care of the Part B premium. QMB goes further and also covers Medicare deductibles and coinsurance. Mississippi looks only at income for these programs, not savings. Extra Help from Social Security lowers Part D drug costs, and Mississippi SHIP counselors can walk you through both applications.

The Area Agency on Aging arranges home-delivered and group meals, homemaker help and senior rides; call 601-981-1511 to ask what's open to you. The same office offers SHIP Medicare counseling, so you can ask about meals and Medicare on one call. The Pearl Public Library on Old Brandon Road has computers, printing and notary service by appointment. JTRAN serves the City of Jackson, not Pearl, so line up rides ahead of time. If you'd like prices on plans that include your doctors, call us for a free review.

Next steps: see how Medicare Advantage compares with a Medicare Supplement, check your Part D drug costs, or map out your turning-65 deadlines.

Common questions

Questions we hear from Pearl

Can Mississippi help pay my Part B premium?
If your income is limited, maybe. The Division of Medicaid runs QMB, SLMB and QI, and each one pays the Part B premium. QMB also covers Medicare deductibles and coinsurance. There's no limit on savings. Call 1-800-421-2408 or ask Mississippi SHIP for help applying.
Where is the Area Agency on Aging for the Jackson area?
The Central Mississippi Planning and Development District runs it from 1020 Centre Pointe Blvd. in Pearl. It covers people 60 and older in Hinds, Madison, Rankin, Copiah, Simpson, Warren and Yazoo counties. Call 601-981-1511.
When can I switch Medicare plans in Pearl?
Every year from October 15 to December 7, anyone with Medicare can change plans for the next year. If you're in a Medicare Advantage plan, you also get one switch between January 1 and March 31. Moving, losing other coverage and a few other events can open a Special Enrollment Period.
