Getting started

Turning 65 in Jackson, MS: Your Medicare Timeline

Turning 65 starts the clock on Medicare, whether you've lived in Jackson all your life or just moved to Madison to be closer to the grandkids. Your sign-up window lasts seven months. It opens three months ahead of your birthday month and closes three months after it.

Sign up early in that window and coverage kicks in on the first day of your birthday month. Wait until later and your start date slides back. So start planning around 64 and a half, well before the week of your birthday.

  • Seven months to sign up, centered on your birthday
  • Different timing if you're still working
  • One protected chance to buy Medigap
  • Free local help with no pressure

Timeline

Your countdown to 65

  1. 1

    Six to three months out

If you have job coverage, settle whether Part B starts now or later. Start writing down your doctors and the drugs you take.

  2. 2

    Three months out

Apply for Part A and Part B through Social Security unless that's done. People already getting benefits receive a card without applying.

  3. 3

    Two months out

Choose a path. One is Original Medicare plus Medigap and Part D. The other is a Medicare Advantage plan. See which plans cover your doctors at UMMC, Baptist, St. Dominic or Merit Health.

  4. 4

    One month out

Get your applications in so the cards show up before coverage begins. Don't let your current coverage lapse before the new plan starts.

  5. 5

    Once you turn 65

Part B starting also starts your six-month Medigap open enrollment. During it, no company can price you based on your health, so make good use of it.

Still working?

Coverage from a job changes the timeline

Still on the job, or covered by a working spouse, at an employer with 20 or more employees? Then you can usually stay on the group plan and hold off on Part B with no penalty. Most people sign up for Part A anyway, since it usually has no premium. Watch out if you save in an HSA. Joining any part of Medicare stops your contributions.

After the job ends, the clock gives you eight months to get Part B. COBRA and retiree plans don't buy you more time, whatever their forms suggest. A slip here ranks among the most expensive Medicare mistakes. Run the numbers with our Part B penalty calculator.

Different rules at small employers

At a company with fewer than 20 employees, Medicare usually pays first once you're 65. Delaying Part B there can leave holes in your coverage. Talk to HR before deciding.

Choosing

Two routes to pick from

  • Original Medicare plus Medigap and Part D: almost any Medicare doctor, more per month, few surprise bills
  • Medicare Advantage: less per month, a fixed network, copays at each visit, and often dental and vision
  • Both routes still carry the Part B premium
  • We'll price each route for you for free

Our guides cover Medigap, Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans. The Medicare checklist is a good first step. Missed your first window? Annual Open Enrollment returns each year from October 15 to December 7.

Local care

New to Medicare near Jackson

We help people new to Medicare in Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties. Your doctors shape the decision. Local care is divided among UMMC, Baptist, St. Dominic and Merit Health, and many Medicare Advantage networks leave one or more out. Which plans you can buy may differ by county as well. If you're a veteran at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, think through how VA care and Medicare would work side by side before choosing. Find your town on our service areas page. For free counseling, call Mississippi SHIP at 844-822-4622.

Get your enrollment timeline checked

We'll double-check your dates, find out if your work coverage lets you put off Part B, and walk through both routes. There's no fee and no need to sign up.

Common questions

Turning 65 questions from Jackson

What is my Initial Enrollment Period?
It's a seven-month stretch built around your 65th birthday. It opens three months ahead of your birthday month, includes that month, and runs three months past it. Enroll during the first three months and your coverage begins on the first day of your birthday month.
Does Medicare enroll me automatically?
It does if you already get Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits. You'll be signed up for Part A and Part B, and your card arrives by mail about three months before your 65th birthday. If you don't get benefits yet, you apply through Social Security.
Can I wait on Part B while I'm still working?
In most cases, yes, as long as you or your spouse get group coverage through a current job and the employer has 20 or more employees. Once that job or that coverage stops, you get eight months to sign up with no penalty. Try the Part B penalty calculator to check your numbers.
How much is Part B in 2026?
The standard premium is $202.90 a month in 2026, and the Part B deductible is $283 for the year. People with higher incomes pay more, based on the tax return they filed two years earlier.
When does my Medigap open enrollment start?
It begins the first month you are both 65 or older and on Part B. For six months after that, no company may turn you away or raise your price over your health. Mississippi gives a separate six-month window to people younger than 65 who qualify for Medicare through a disability. See Medigap in Jackson.
Where can I get free Medicare counseling in Mississippi?
Mississippi SHIP counselors answer Medicare questions for free at 844-822-4622. You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE.
