Medigap (Medicare Supplement) Plans in Jackson, MS
Original Medicare pays a large part of your hospital and doctor bills and leaves the rest to you. A Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, pays most of those deductibles, coinsurance and copays. Your yearly costs come out about the same in a healthy year and a hard one.
Plans with the same letter cover the same things at every company, so Plan G from one insurer pays exactly what Plan G pays from another. The companies differ on price, on service and on how fast their rates climb.
- Use any doctor who accepts Medicare
- A set premium and few surprise bills
- No network to stay inside, no referrals
- Coverage that goes with you across the U.S.

How it works
Medicare pays first, then Medigap covers most of the rest
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) is still your main coverage. Say you have surgery at UMMC, Mississippi Baptist Medical Center or St. Dominic. Medicare gets the bill first, and the part it doesn't pay goes on to your Medigap company automatically. With Plan G, most people pay only the yearly Part B deductible for Medicare-covered care. That deductible is $283 in 2026.
There's no Medigap network, so the question of whether a doctor is "in the plan" never comes up. Any doctor who takes Medicare is covered, in Jackson or in any other state. Medigap leaves out drugs, which is why most members also buy a standalone Part D drug plan.
That freedom helps in an area where care is split among several hospital groups. Your family doctor might be with Baptist, your heart doctor at UMMC and your knee surgeon at St. Dominic. Medigap treats them all the same, as long as they accept Medicare. Veterans can use the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center as well. We work with people all over the Jackson area.
Compare
Plan G vs. Plan N vs. High-Deductible Plan G
| Plan | Monthly premium | Your share of costs | A good fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan G | The most of the three | Only the yearly Part B deductible | Anyone who wants few bills and a year with no surprises |
| Plan N | In between | The Part B deductible, small copays at the doctor and ER, and maybe excess charges | Healthy people with few doctor visits who'd like to pay less each month |
| High-Deductible Plan G | The least of the three | A large yearly deductible first, then Plan G benefits | Premium-minded people who could cover the cost of a bad year |
Benefits stay fixed, prices don't
Medigap benefits are set by law, so the premium is what changes over time. We can price your Plan G or Plan N again each year. In Mississippi, moving to another company outside a protected window means health questions, so it's easier to do while you're healthy.
No drug coverage in Medigap
Budget for a separate Part D plan. If you skip it when you first become eligible and have no other creditable drug coverage, the late penalty can stay with you.
Timing
The six months that matter most
Your Medigap open enrollment lasts six months. It begins the first month you're both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. In those six months, a company has to sell you any policy it offers in Mississippi. Your health can't be used to refuse you or to raise your price.
A company can still hold off on paying for a pre-existing condition for up to six months. Earlier creditable coverage, like a health plan through work, can shorten that wait or remove it.
Once the window shuts, companies are free to ask about your health. Many people pass anyway. Still, things like a recent heart procedure, using oxygen or diabetes that needs insulin can narrow your options. If you're turning 65 in Jackson, call us about three months before.
- Six-month open enrollment starts with Part B at 65 or older
- Mississippi gives people under 65 on disability their own six-month window
- Guaranteed renewable as long as you pay the premium
- Federal guaranteed-issue rights kick in for set events, such as your plan leaving the area
Mississippi rules
Medigap before 65, and no yearly switch window
If you have Medicare before 65 because of a disability, Mississippi gives you a six-month Medigap open enrollment that starts the month you qualify for Medicare. If Medicare approves your Part B late and backdates it, your six months start on the date of that approval.
Policies sold to people under 65 usually cost more than the same plan bought at 65. When you reach 65, you get a second six-month open enrollment. You can use it to move to any plan, priced for your age group, with no health questions.
Some states also let Medigap members change companies once a year around a birthday or policy anniversary. Mississippi has no rule like that. After your open enrollment, buying from a new company usually means answering health questions, unless a federal guaranteed-issue right applies. Before your first purchase, it's worth asking how each company's rates have gone up over the past few years, since you may keep that company a long time.

You see more than one specialist

When money is fixed, a premium you can plan on often feels safer than the chance of hitting an out-of-pocket maximum. -
You travel to see family
Your coverage works with any U.S. doctor who takes Medicare, so there's no out-of-area network to check.

Underwriting
Buying Medigap outside a protected window
Health questions are off limits in your six-month open enrollment and whenever a guaranteed-issue right applies. Outside those times, they're fair game. You'll likely be asked about diagnoses, surgeries, medicines and any tests still waiting on results. Based on your answers, the company can say no or offer a higher price.
Under federal law, some events give you a guaranteed-issue right. Your Advantage plan pulls out of your area. Your group plan from an employer ends. A company misled you. Or you joined an Advantage plan at 65 and leave it within the 12-month trial. Each of these windows is short. We go over your health history before we start any application, so you aren't left with a denial.
If health questions look like a problem, we'll say so and go over Medicare Advantage with you. Have a plan already and want something new? Read about changing your Medicare plan.
Rates
How prices rise, and coverage on the road
How Medigap prices change
The benefits stay put, so price is what moves. Many companies use attained-age pricing: your premium rises as you get older, and again when the company raises rates for everyone. After a few years, two companies selling the same Plan G can charge very different amounts.
Mississippi doesn't give Medigap members a yearly window to change companies without health questions. Moving to a new company or a different plan letter usually means underwriting, so it goes more smoothly while you're in good health.
Travel and access
Paired with Original Medicare, Medigap works with any provider in the U.S. who takes Medicare. You don't need a referral, and there's no network to check before you see a specialist in Memphis, New Orleans or anywhere else.
Plan G and Plan N include some emergency coverage for travel outside the country, with a deductible and a limit. It helps, but for a long trip abroad you'd still want travel medical insurance.
