Medicare Open Enrollment in Jackson, MS
Annual Open Enrollment, often called AEP, is the stretch each fall when almost anyone with Medicare can change plans without needing a reason. It runs October 15 through December 7, and the plan you pick starts January 1.
This is also the season of mailers, TV ads and sales calls. Feel free to ignore them. Focus on your prescriptions and your doctors, and take your time with one clear choice.

What's allowed
What you can change during AEP
- Move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan
- Move from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare
- Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
- Join, drop or change a standalone Part D drug plan
Medigap follows separate rules
Medicare Supplement plans fall outside AEP. A Medigap plan application can go in at any time. Once your first Medigap window closes, though, expect questions about your health. Mississippi offers no yearly anniversary window to skip them.
Prepare
Four steps to a quick review
-
1
Read your Annual Notice of Change
Plans mail this by the end of September. It lays out what's changing next year for the premium, copays, drug tiers and network.
-
2
Update your drug list
Doses shift and new drugs get added. What you take now drives your cost more than anything else, so have the list handy. The Part D guide covers what to look at.
-
3
Confirm your providers
Find your clinic and hospital, in Ridgeland, Pearl or anywhere else, in next year's directory. The current one may already be stale.
-
4
Decide by Thanksgiving
The December 7 deadline doesn't move. Waiting until the final days leaves no room to correct an error.

Local networks
What tends to change in Jackson plans
Around Jackson, Advantage networks are built on UMMC, Baptist, St. Dominic and Merit Health. Year to year, a plan may pick up a hospital group or lose one. Search the new directory for each doctor and hospital by name. The lineup of plans shifts by county, too. What's sold in Rankin County might not be sold in Hinds County, which is why we begin with your ZIP code. Our service areas page lists every place we help.
Other windows
If you miss December 7
Advantage members can still make a single change, any time from January 1 through March 31. You can move to another Advantage plan, or return to Original Medicare and pick up a Part D plan. Past March 31, a change takes a Special Enrollment Period, which comes from an event such as leaving your plan's service area or losing job-based coverage.
Brand new to Medicare? Your window is the Initial Enrollment Period around turning 65. Unsure where you stand? Our guide to changing plans sorts it out.
